Indian Railways launched free Wi-Fi facility at eight suburban stations in the metropolis coupled with a host of other passenger amenities at various destinations. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu who inaugurated the broadband internet facility at eight major stations reaffirmed that his ministry was doing every bit to ease the commute and raise the bar of comfort for rail passengers.

The Wi-Fi services are being provided under ‘RailWire’, which has been designed to offer users the best and fastest internet experience to anyone who has a smartphone. About 17 suburban stations in Mumbai have been chosen for installation of the Wi-Fi facility, which is being provided by RailTel at a speed of 1 gbps. While Mumbai Central is already Wi-Fi enabled, the work for providing Wi-Fi at eight more suburban stations is underway.

“This facility shall enable our railway passengers to remain connected, get railway related and other information online while waiting for the train,” according to a Railway presentation at the inauguration event. Among other passengers amenities, Prabhu dedicated the two new harbour line platforms (which are 270 metre long and can accommodate 12 coaches trains) constructed at Andheri station.

Then How to Connect to this free wifi:-

As expected, Google in partnership with RailTel has launched a free Wi-Fi service in India, and the first railway station to get this service is Mumbai Central. For now, Google says that passengers will be able to use the RailWire Wi-Fi service free for as much time as they are waiting, but they are likely to “notice a drop in speed after their first hour on the network.” Let’s take a look at how one can connect to the free RailWire Wi-Fi network.

While one can connect their smartphones, laptops or tablets to the RailWire Wi-Fi netwok, one needs an active Indian mobile phone number. You will need to enter this phone number every time you try to connect a device to the Wi-Fi network.

First, head over to the Wi-Fi settings on your smartphone, tablet or laptop and select the ‘RailWire’ network. The next step is to open a browser and enter the URL – railwire.co.in – where you will be prompted to enter a mobile phone number. Key in your phone number, and click on Receive SMS.

You will soon receive an SMS on your mobile with a four digit OTP (one-time password) code. Enter this unique code in your Wi-Fi login screen and click on Done. A few seconds later you will have connected to the RailWire Wi-Fi network and you will be able to enjoy the service for free.

While the government is theoretically capable of deploying a nationwide wireless network, massive government projects tend to cost much more and take far longer to implement than what is budgeted. WiFi implementation studies and planning alone could take years to develop. Suffice it to say, a nationwide wireless project of this magnitude will take a very long time get off the ground.

So,They made our own arrangements developing the network infrastructure on rolling out Wi-Fi to make access to the Internet free and easy for millions of people across India.
